The history of our beautiful village Damerham

Damerham is a site of a prehistoric complex including two 6000 year old tombs representing some of the earliest monuments in Britain.

The village was also an estate of the kings of Wessex and a religious community that was mentioned in the will of Alfred the great.

The church of St George situated in the north of the village has served the community of Damerham for around 900 years.

The building’s most significant benefactor was Henry of Blois, Abbot of Glastonbury (1129-1171), Bishop of Winchester and brother of King Stephen of England. A grandson of William the Conqueror.

The church has rare features including a canonical sundial and a relief of St George.

Damerham also used to have a park in 1518 which contained 125 acres of woodland with local wildlife such as deer using the area as their habitat. It was divided into three coppices (Edmundshay, Middle Coppis and Drakenorth Coppis) It was reportedly disparked before 1540.
